Fiume was an independent state from 1920-1924. It was a small territory only about 28 square kilometers on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, near present day Croatia. Fiume was annexed by Italy in 1924, then eventually became part of Yugoslavia after the Paris Peace Treaty in 1947.
