What is Cloisonné?
Cloisonné (pronounced cloy-zuh-NAY) is an enameling technique where thin wires (typically made of gold, silver, or brass) are affixed to a metal base to outline a design. These wire “compartments” (called cloisons, French for “partitions”) are then filled with colored enamel paste made from powdered glass.
The medallion is then fired in a kiln, causing the enamel to melt and harden, and polished smooth so the wires and enamel are flush with each other.
