After three years without producing proof sets because of a coin shortage, the US Mint began offering them again in 1968.  For the first time, the proof set was manufactured at the San Francisco Mint. 

Proof coin sets are produced by the US mint in San Francisco using a process that brings out the beauty of each coin’s design.  The dies and planchets (the metal disks that will become coins) are polished before the coin is struck.  This gives the fields (blank areas) a mirrored look and the image a frosted effect.  Proof coins are struck twice, giving the coin a sharper design and rims.  The proof sets are packaged at the mint and display America’s coins at their best.  Each set is only produced for one year, so the supply is limited.

This set deserves a home equal to the coins’ beauty, and the strong plastic display case is just that home.  This packaging replaced the plastic sleeves used in previous years.
