The King’s Unique Dance Style
This coin honors Elvis’ unique dance style. This now-iconic image was captured by photographer Robert Smith on April 1, 1957, at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, New York. The story of this photo is as interesting as the dance it pictures.
Going through his pictures, Smith thought this shot was particularly striking, capturing Elvis’ unique moves. He sent it to Colonel Parker, but never got a response. Years went by and Smith forgot about it. Then one day he got a visit from an Elvis historian who immediately recognized the image. As it turns out, when Colonel Parker sold his entire collection to Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE), he didn’t mention that he never bought the rights to the image. It soon appeared on Christmas ornaments, shot glasses, snow globes, credit cards, t-shirts, and posters. The image was even on the bags given to customers for purchases at Graceland. In the end, Smith met with EPE and received unprecedented rights to continue to produce it.
