A Long Train Ride Home
In the summer of 1956, Elvis had a successful, busy trip to New York City – appearing on The Steve Allen Show and completing a recording session that produced “Hound Dog” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” He then embarked on a 27-hour train ride back to Memphis. A moment from that long trip is captured on this coin.
Elvis spent much of the early part of his trip listening to his recordings over and over again. After a while he began to relax and enjoy the trip. At one point, he met a pair of young girls and tried to convince them who he was. “Really, believe me, I’m Elvis Presley,” he told them. They still didn’t believe him. He then pointed to the photographer who had been following him for days and asked why he’d have a photographer taking his picture on a train if he wasn’t Elvis. This seemed to convince the girls. However, they still turned down his invitation to attend his upcoming concert in Memphis.
To keep himself and his companions amused, Elvis also put on Colonel Tom Parker’s hat and attempted a funny impersonation – including the strong Southern drawl. Though Elvis and his entourage were entertained, the colonel was unfazed, and continued talking. Elvis also wandered around the train with a giant stuffed panda bear. This train ride may have been one of the last times Elvis could travel so freely, as his recent Steve Allen Show appearance catapulted him into the public eye.
