Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de’ Galilei (1564-1642), known as Galileo, was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer.  He studied the physics of speed, gravity, and motion, as well as developing the thermoscope (which led to modern thermometers) and military compasses.  What Galileo is remembered for centuries later is his improved telescope.  With it, he observed stars and planets within the Milky Way galaxy.  His view that the sun was the center of the universe led to house arrest.  He continued his work despite the opposition he received.
