Ordered to Stand Still – Jacksonville, Florida

By 1956, Elvis was becoming famous around the country.  He had appeared on CBS television’s Stage Show several times that year.  Presley’s dance moves while singing sparked controversy among the older generations, while his younger fans went wild.  It was during this time of contrasts that Elvis rolled into Jacksonville, Florida for a concert.  He had performed there the previous year, and the town leaders weren’t impressed with Elvis’s performance or the crowd’s reaction.

This time they warned him to behave himself.  Juvenile Court Judge Marion Gooding prepared arrest warrants against Presley.  The charges included “impairing the morals of minors.”  The judge assured Elvis, he would throw him in jail if he moved his hips in the suggestive way he had at the previous concert.

The concert went as planned on August 10.  The local police were seated in the front to keep Elvis in line while protecting him from his fans.  Judge Gooding was also in the audience, and Elvis behaved himself to the judge’s satisfaction.  In spite of the restriction placed on Presley, he still gave his fans an enjoyable show.
