This historic meeting is commemorated on a genuine uncirculated US half dollar that has been enhanced with a photograph of Elvis during his concert that night.

Elvis and Elton met on June 27, 1976, at the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland. Prior to Elvis’ performance, Elton was brought backstage to meet his idol.  During their brief meeting, Elvis told Elton how he greatly admired him and his music. And Elton returned the enthusiasm, offering to write and sing a song they could do together later. Elton also asked Elvis to perform “Heartbreak Hotel.” Elton later reported that meeting Elvis gave him goosebumps.

Elton and his friends spent the show in their second row seats where they visibly enjoyed the performance. Throughout the night they could be seen dancing in their chairs. Elton was also the first person in the audience to stand and applaud Elvis’ performance of “America the Beautiful.”
