Own Scarce Pair of First US Stamp – On Cover
This cover is part of America’s early postal history. Bearing a pair of US #1 stamps, it was sent from the Bank of South Carolina in Charleston to the Bank of Louisiana in New Orleans. The stamps are tied to the cover by a red Charleston postmark.
The pair covered the 10¢ rate for mail traveling over 300 miles. This cover traveled over 700 miles between, so the higher postage rate applied.
Stamp #1 was printed in small quantities compared to later stamps. As a result, the 1847 Franklin is increasingly scarce today, especially on cover and as an attached pair. It’s a miracle this cover has survived for over 175 years. Think of the caring hands that have protected it all this time. And now you can take your turn in preserving this scarce cover for generations to come.
