Why the stamp was issued:  This stamp was issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the US post office.  It honors Benjamin Franklin, the first postmaster general.

About the stamp design:  The stamp design in based on the 5¢ stamp issued in 1847.  The original stamp was the first stamp with that denomination ever issued in America. 

First Day City: The First Day of Issue ceremony for this stamp was held at the USPS headquarters in Washington, DC.

Unusual fact about this stamp: The stamp was only available for sale at the Post Office as part of a prestige booklet.  The 32-page Putting a Stamp on the American Experience booklet pays tribute to the importance of US stamps as a reflection of the nation’s history and culture.  This was only the fourth prestige booklet ever issued in the US.

History the stamp represents: Benjamin Franklin helped birth a nation, shape its values, and connect its people.  His name is etched in American history, not only as a statesman and inventor.  Franklin was also the first Postmaster General of the United States, laying the foundation of a system that would bind colonies into a country.  In 1775, while the revolution stirred, he accepted the assignment to create a postal service that carried more than just letters; it carried ideas, unity, and hope.
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Post Office, the Postal Service issued stamps honoring Franklin’s legacy.  More than a commemorative issue, this release honors Benjamin Franklin’s bold vision.  He once rode for miles on muddy trails lit up only by his lantern to map delivery routes.  Franklin believed mail could connect people and ideas across great distances, allowing every citizen to be heard.  This stamp celebrates 250 years of communication that helped shape a nation and the world.
